Harness the Power of the Internet as a Working Professional

Whether you are a new graduate facing up to the “real world” for the first time, or a battle hardened professional at the peak of your career – it can be tough to keep on top of it all. Every day, new technologies make their way into your life. What is a Google CV? How can you manage your online reputation? Are you on Twitter, Buzz or LinkedIn?

Even if you are not active online, the Internet shapes your life. Word of mouth spreads along new networks. Reputations are made and destroyed. Our banks are moving online, and tax returns are called “e-filing”. Schools and universities are gaining a virtual dimension, with e-books, document sharing, wikis and forums. The never ending, ever growing list of new technologies and opportunities can seem overwhelming.

One of the greatest innovations in recent years is the growth of the World Wide Web that made the Internet accessible to everyone. No longer the playground of geeks and computer scientists, the Internet has become a treasure trove of knowledge, a market place, a school, and a place to connect to others.

Do you know how to construct an online presence for yourself and use it to find work or attract new clients? Are you able to keep on top of the latest news, keep track of the trends, to keep ahead of the pack?

Whether it is creating a professional Curriculum Vitae on LinkedIn, making connections with like experts in your field on Twitter, or collaborating with colleagues on the other side of the world on an online forum – your Internet browser can unlock a whole new world of information and opportunity.

One place to start is the University of Cape Town Internet Super-User Course. The University of Cape Town’s Department of Information Systems has partnered with GetSmarter, a specialist online training company, to present this part time, Internet based course.

The online nature of the course means that anyone from anywhere in South Africa can take part, and participants can study according to their own schedule. The course is suitable for novice to intermediate Internet users.

The course includes modules on Internet Communication Tools, Search Engines, Online Research, Managing Information, Information Security and Transacting Online, Social Networking, Publish Yourself, Mobile Technology and Ongoing Education, Web Culture and Responsible Netizens.

The course is due to start on the 12th of April 2010 and registrations close on the 31st of March 2010. Please contact Deborah on 021 685 4775 or deborah@getsmarter.co.za for further information. Alternatively see www.getsmarter.co.za.
